Men, women and talent is the theme this year of the Salon de l'Agriculture, inaugurated this Saturday by the President of the Republic. Although the sector is doing better this year, there are still many sources of concern.

It is a less agricultural world in crisis that will meet Emmanuel Macron this year, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Salon de l'agriculture. With the exception of the sugar sector, which is very much affected by the depressed prices, French agriculture is doing better. This is evidenced by the increase in its share of GDP last year and the improvement of the agricultural trade balance.

Dairy farming has particularly benefited from a better world situation but also from the new law on trade negotiations: mass distribution has played a little better the game in this sector.

But cattle farmers do not see any improvement. French wheat is competing on its foreign markets with Russian wheat. Many sectors - viticulture, fruit and vegetables - are already seeing the British market shrink, even before Brexit. Not to mention the fear of a declining European budget.

It is no coincidence that the fair's muse is this year an organic dairy cow: French agriculture must rethink its model towards more ecology and diversity. Even the majority agricultural union agrees today. Faced with all these challenges, Emmanuel Macron should, according to the Elysee, defend a strong agricultural Europe. Sine qua non condition , he believes, of a strong agricultural France.
